Your Customer Knows More Than You About the Product
This is what makes the category different from general gifting. An anime buyer knows the character, the series, the arc it came from, and whether the sculpt is any good. They will spot a poor figure instantly and they will tell other people.
That cuts both ways. Get it right and this is the most loyal customer base in retail — they return for every new release, they buy in sets, and they bring their friends. Get it wrong and word travels just as fast.
The practical implication: stock quality over quantity in this category, and be honest about what a piece is. A well-made ₹1,500 figure builds your reputation. Twenty poor ₹200 ones damage it.
You Do Not Need to Watch Anime to Sell It
Three rules cover most of it.
Follow what is currently airing. Demand tracks new seasons closely. A series with a new season out will outsell one that ended three years ago, however famous it is.
Buy mixed for your first orders. Order across many series in small quantities. Your customers will tell you which ones your local market follows, by what they buy and what they ask for. That information is worth more than any general advice.
Listen to requests. When three people ask for the same character in a month, that is your next order. These buyers are unusually direct about what they want.
The Categories Nobody Else Stocks
This is where a specialist store wins. Display katanas, prop weapons and cosplay accessories are almost absent from Indian retail outside the metros. When a customer wants a specific prop, there is usually nowhere local to buy one — so the shop that stocks it becomes the destination for that entire community.
Gaming desk mats are the other one. They have crossed from niche into mainstream gaming demand, and they sell to a wider audience than figures do.
Display Matters More Here Than Anywhere
Figures behind glass in a dim corner do not move. The same figures on a lit shelf at eye level do.
Group by series rather than by product type, so a fan can find everything from their show in one place. And put one strong display piece where it is visible from outside — it signals to passers-by that you stock this category at all, which is most of the battle in a city where nobody else does.
Conventions Are a Second Business
Comic con and pop-culture events across India draw exactly your customer, concentrated and in a buying mood. Stock has to be landed before the event, not ordered during it. With roughly six-week import lead times, work backwards from convention dates the same way a gift shop works backwards from Diwali.
A Realistic Stock Split
- Around half in keychains, stickers, jewellery and accessories under ₹200 — the volume and the entry point for younger buyers
- Around a third in figures and chibi-style figures in the ₹200–₹600 band
- The rest in premium display pieces, props and decor that anchor the shop and attract serious collectors
Trade Terms
- Wholesale only — priced for resale, not retail
- Low minimum order quantity — test series before committing
- Quantity slabs — better rates at carton volume
- GST tax invoice on every consignment
- Regular import cycles — bestsellers restocked, which matters when a customer is completing a set
