Return gifts: the year-round business hiding in every birthday party
Festivals come and go, but birthdays happen every week. In much of urban and semi-urban India, children's birthday parties come with return gifts for every guest — often fifteen, twenty-five or more of the same item.
For a toy and gift shop, this is steady business that does not depend on the season. Parents planning a party are short on time and want someone to make it easy. The shop that does becomes their regular supplier, and often for their friends too.
What parents want
Parents buying return gifts usually care about:
- A fixed budget per child, commonly somewhere between ₹30 and ₹150.
- Enough identical or equal-value pieces so no child feels left out.
- Something suitable for both boys and girls, or separate options for each.
- Presentation — neatly packed, ideally ready to hand out.
- Speed — they often come in just a few days before the party.
What to stock
Good return gifts are inexpensive, colourful, safe and widely liked. Common choices include:
- Stationery sets and pencil boxes
- Keychains and small character items
- Mini die-cast cars
- Small puzzles and games
- Water bottles and tiffin boxes
- Light-up or novelty toys
- Small soft toys
Character and theme items are popular — many parents plan parties around a theme, and they will look for return gifts that match.
Stock depth, not just variety
A return gift order needs many pieces of the same item. If a parent wants 25 of something and you only have 8, you have lost the sale. For your main return gift items, keep enough depth to fill a typical order on the spot.
It is better to have six items in depth than thirty items with a handful of each.
Price points
Organise your return gift range by price per piece, and display it that way. A shelf or section with clear signs — "Return gifts ₹49", "₹99", "₹149" — lets parents choose quickly.
For larger quantities, you can offer a modest saving per piece, but do not discount so much that the order is no longer worthwhile. Remember to account for any packing you do.
Packing and presentation
Offer to pack each gift in a small bag with a thank-you tag. Many parents will happily pay a little extra for this because it saves them an evening of work. Keep a supply of plain bags and tags, and consider tags with space for the child's name.
Make it easy to order ahead
Parents often know the party date weeks in advance. Encourage them to order early so you can make sure stock is available:
- Keep photos of return gift options on WhatsApp ready to send.
- Take orders with a small advance for larger quantities.
- Note the party date and confirm pickup a day or two before.
Ready-made packs
For the most common budgets, prepare ready-made return gift packs: for example, a pack containing a pencil, eraser, small notebook and keychain at a fixed price. Display one sample prominently. A parent who sees a finished, attractive pack at the right price will often buy without looking further.
Build repeat business
A parent who has a good experience will come back for the next child's birthday, and will recommend you to other parents at the party. Ask satisfied customers if they would like to join your WhatsApp list, and send occasional updates about new return gift ideas.
The short version
Return gifts are year-round business. Stock a focused range of inexpensive, popular items in depth. Organise and display them by price per piece. Offer packing and tags, take advance orders, and prepare ready-made packs for common budgets. Do it well and parents come back for every birthday.
