Google Business Profile: the free listing every local shop should claim

When a parent in your area searches "toy shop near me" or "gift shop" on their phone, the first thing they usually see is a map with a few shops on it. Those listings come from Google Business Profile, and they are free.

For a local shop, this listing can bring more new customers than any paid advertising. Yet many shops either have no listing, or one with the wrong timings, no photos and a handful of old reviews.

Claim and verify your listing

Search for your shop's name on Google Maps. If it appears, there will be an option to claim it. If it does not, you can add it. Google will ask you to verify that you are the owner, usually by phone, video or a code. Follow the steps fully — an unverified listing cannot be properly managed.

Fill in everything

A complete listing is more likely to be shown, and more likely to be chosen. Make sure you have:

  • The correct shop name, exactly as on your signboard. Do not stuff extra keywords into the name.
  • The right category. "Toy store" or "Gift shop" as the primary category, with related categories added.
  • An accurate address and map pin. Check that the pin is on your actual shop, not the next building.
  • Phone number and, if you use it, WhatsApp.
  • Opening hours, including special hours for festivals and holidays.
  • A short description of what you sell and who you serve.

Hours matter more than anything

Few things annoy a customer more than travelling to a shop that Google said was open, only to find the shutters down. Update your hours before every festival, holiday and any day you close unexpectedly. Google allows special hours for specific dates.

Photos

Listings with good photos get far more attention. Add:

  • The shopfront, so people recognise it when they arrive
  • The inside of the shop, showing the range
  • Close-ups of popular products
  • Festival displays and gift sets

Add new photos every few weeks. A listing with recent photos looks active and trustworthy.

Reviews

Reviews affect both where you appear and whether people choose you. The best way to get them is simply to ask satisfied customers. A small card at the counter with a QR code linking to your review page makes it easy.

Some important rules:

  • Ask real customers only. Do not write fake reviews or pay for them. This is against Google's policies, can get your listing penalised, and customers can often tell.
  • Reply to every review, positive and negative.
  • For negative reviews, respond politely and factually, apologise where appropriate, and offer to resolve the problem. Other customers read your replies and judge you by them.

Posts and updates

Google Business Profile lets you publish short posts with a photo: new arrivals, festival collections, an offer. These appear on your listing and show customers the shop is active. Posting once a week or so is enough.

Answer questions

Customers can ask questions on your listing, and anyone can answer them — including people who do not know your shop. Check regularly and answer questions yourself so that the information is accurate.

Products

You can add products with photos and prices to your listing. Add a selection of bestsellers and gift sets. This helps customers see what you offer before they visit.

Check it regularly

Anyone can suggest edits to a listing, and Google sometimes accepts them. Check your profile every couple of weeks to make sure the hours, phone number and address have not been changed.

The short version

Claim and verify your Google listing. Fill in every field accurately, with the right category and map pin. Keep hours up to date, especially around festivals. Add real photos regularly, ask real customers for reviews and reply to all of them. Post updates, answer questions, and check the listing often.
