Diwali 2026 Stock Planning: What Gift Retailers Should Order Now

Diwali is the single largest selling window in Indian gift retail, and the buying decisions that determine how your season goes are made now — not in October. This guide covers what to order, when to commit, and the mistakes that cost retailers margin every year.

Why August Is the Deadline, Not October

Most imported gift stock reaches Indian warehouses roughly six weeks after it is ordered from the factory. Add transit time to your city and you are looking at seven to eight weeks from order to shelf.

Work backwards from Diwali and the arithmetic is unforgiving. Stock ordered in late September arrives when the season is already underway. Stock ordered in October arrives after it. Retailers who commit in August get first pick of designs at full quantity; those who wait buy whatever is left, often at worse rates, and frequently in the wrong assortment.

There is a second reason to move early. Every wholesaler in India is competing for the same factory production slots and the same freight capacity in the run-up to the festive quarter. Early orders get clean allocations. Late orders get partial fills.

What Actually Sells at Diwali

Decorative lighting

Lighting is the defining Diwali category. Beyond conventional string lights, the items that carry real margin are decorative and ambient pieces — night lamps, moon lamps, projectors and 3D acrylic illusion lamps. These sell as gifts rather than utility, which means no MRP comparison and retail spreads of three to five times landed cost.

Home decor and showpieces

Diwali is when Indian households buy for their own homes and for gifting to others. Decorative showpieces, resin figurines and table pieces move steadily through the entire festive month. Buyers judge on appearance alone, so display quality matters more than brand.

Packaging — the category retailers forget

Almost every Diwali sale involves packaging, and almost every retailer under-orders it. Gift bags, boxes and wrapping sheets are what turn a ₹200 item into a ₹500 gift. They also run out first. Order packaging in genuine volume — it is cheap, it never expires, and running short mid-season costs you sales on everything else.

Corporate gifting

Offices buy in bulk in the weeks before Diwali, in quantities of one hundred to a thousand pieces, with far less price negotiation than retail customers. Executive diaries, boxed pen sets and desk clocks are the standard picks. If you have never quoted a corporate order, September is when to start approaching local offices.

Kids and family gifting

Toys perform strongly through the festive quarter, particularly items in the ₹100–₹400 band that parents agree to without argument. Family card and party games also sell well during a period when households are hosting.

How to Split Your Diwali Budget

A workable structure for a general gift retailer:

  • Around 40% in proven fast-movers — categories you sold out of last year. Repeat what worked.
  • Around 30% in lighting and decor — the categories with the strongest Diwali-specific pull.
  • Around 20% in packaging and consumables — higher than most retailers allocate, and almost never regretted.
  • Around 10% in new or premium lines — your test budget. Small enough that a miss does not hurt, large enough to learn something for next year.

These are starting proportions, not rules. Adjust them against what your own counter actually sold last season.

Four Mistakes That Cost Retailers Money

Ordering late and paying for it twice. Late buyers pay higher rates and get worse selection. The cost is invisible because you never see the margin you did not make.

Over-buying one design. A design that looks good in a catalogue photo is not proven demand. Mixed cartons across several designs tell you what your market wants; a full carton of one item tells you nothing until it is too late.

Under-ordering packaging. Covered above, and worth repeating because it happens every single year.

Ignoring the week after. Demand does not stop on Diwali night. Wedding season follows immediately from November, and buyers who cleared their shelves for Diwali have nothing left for it. Plan the two seasons together, not separately.

A Note on Working Capital

Festive buying ties up cash for weeks before it returns. Order what you can genuinely fund without straining the rest of your business. A retailer who buys conservatively and sells out has had a good season. A retailer who over-commits, discounts in November to clear stock, and enters the wedding season short of cash has not — even if the topline looked bigger.
